Check a Word

Type any word to instantly see whether it is valid in Scrabble or Words With Friends, its point value, and its definition.

What Does This Tool Do?

The word checker looks up any word you type against the ENABLE word list — a reference dictionary of more than 172,000 English words that closely matches the lists used in Scrabble (NWL / SOWPODS) and Words With Friends. In under a second it tells you whether the word is valid for play, calculates its base Scrabble tile score, and lets you pull up the full definition.

Use it to settle arguments mid-game, verify a word before playing it, or simply explore whether an unusual word you know is in the dictionary.

How Scrabble Points Are Calculated

Each letter tile in Scrabble has a base point value. The score shown by this tool is the sum of every letter in the word: A, E, I, O, U, L, N, S, T, R = 1 pt · D, G = 2 pts · B, C, M, P = 3 pts · F, H, V, W, Y = 4 pts · K = 5 pts · J, X = 8 pts · Q, Z = 10 pts.

The base score does not include bonuses from Double Letter, Triple Letter, Double Word, or Triple Word squares on the board — those multiply in-game based on where you place the tiles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What dictionary does this tool use?

Words are checked against the ENABLE word list, a widely used English reference of more than 172,000 words. It closely matches the dictionaries used in Scrabble (NWL for North America, SOWPODS for international play) and Words With Friends, though a small number of edge-case words may differ.

Is this an official Scrabble dictionary checker?

This tool uses the ENABLE word list, which is not the official Scrabble dictionary but is very similar to it. The vast majority of valid Scrabble words will be correctly identified as valid, and invalid words as invalid. For official tournament play, verify against the NWL (North America) or SOWPODS (international) lists.

How are Scrabble point values calculated?

The score shown is the sum of the base tile values for each letter: A=1, B=3, C=3, D=2, E=1, F=4, G=2, H=4, I=1, J=8, K=5, L=1, M=3, N=1, O=1, P=3, Q=10, R=1, S=1, T=1, U=1, V=4, W=4, X=8, Y=4, Z=10. Board bonus squares are not included.

Can I check Words With Friends words?

Yes. The ENABLE word list closely overlaps with the Words With Friends dictionary. Note that Words With Friends uses slightly different letter point values than Scrabble, so the score shown here reflects standard Scrabble values, not the exact WWF score.
